The sought after Safe Sex collection of graphics from Jean Paul Gaultier originates during what was a crisis of HIV in the world. It was a common theme for this time period as seen through the Beirendonck piece on my page to promote safe sex to avoid the now deadly sexually transmitted diseases. It was personal for Gaultier as his close friend of many years was a victim in 1990. The designers used their talents as an outlet to spread the message of awareness that has led to condoms being more readily used and available and more education for kids toward these dangers.
