collaboration with Gee’s Bend Quilters an ancestral traditional quilting organization in Gee’s Bend, Alabama off the Alabama River.
The residents of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, are direct descendants of the enslaved people who worked the cotton plantation established in 1816 by Joseph Gee. The quilts are considered extremely important contributions to African American history and art. As time went on the community changed but the quilting remained and in the 60’s they sold to Bloomingdale’s and Sears etc. In the 2000’s a large exhibition displaying 4 generations of the Gee’s Bend quilts being called some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.
